                     ORGANIZE!

Unions help many working men and women make it to the middle class. It's no coincidence that when union membership declines, so do living wage jobs. That's why organizing is a top priority in the IAM. Organizing brings the benefits of union membership to more working families. Organizing benefits current members too! More union members means greater clout at the bargaining table and in our legislative halls.

If you need a union... you came to the right place!

The IAM’s mission is "Service to the Community and Justice on the Job".

Justice on the Job starts with organizing a union!

The IAM Organizing Department can help you in many ways. We have experienced and motivated organizers to lead you through your campaign. These people work very hard to maintain our winning record. All contacts are treated as strictly confidential, with no obligation.                  http://www.goiam.org/power-work.cfm

Getting union-ized with the IAM

When it comes to the process of becoming organized, many workers do not know what is involved, what their rights are, or even how to get started. These ten steps are not offered as a final or exhaustive list of how the process works, but as a brief guide on how to get organized in Ontario.
Prospective members should be aware that their right to Union representation is guaranteed under the law, and that it is illegal for a Company to take action against an employee for seeking to form a Union.

The 10 Steps of the Certification Process are as follows:

1. Initial contact with the Union results in a meeting between some of the
employees seeking certification and the Union's representatives.

2. Employees sign Application For Membership cards. Please note that all
Applications for Membership are treated in the strictest confidence -
your employer will never see these cards!

3. Once a majority of employees have signed cards, the IAM applies to the
    Labor board for certification.

4. A vote will be held, usually within 5 days, to determine the wishes of
    the majority of employees.

5. Assuming the employees vote for the union, the Labor Board will grant
    the certification to the IAM.

6. The Union holds meetings with the employees to get proposals/demands
    for collective bargaining.

7. The workers elect their own Shop Stewards and negotiating committee
representative(s), or they are appointed through the Business Reps.

8. Collective Bargaining sessions are held between the Company and the
    Union.

9. Settlement of your Collective Agreement is determined by a
majority vote of the employees involved.

10. Only upon ratification of a collective agreement does the IAM begin
collecting dues from its new members.
